Learners encourage to understand financial literacy concept

The Eastern Cape department of education Curriculum General education and training and Early child Development Directorate in partnership with Banking Association South Africa, University of Fort Hare and Camp I Am held a provincial Financial Literacy Spelling Bee and Economics Management Science Quiz Competition for grade 7 to grade 9 learners in East London Leadership Institute on the 23rd August 2018. 

The purpose for this competition is to encourage learners to be able to know and understand the financial literacy concept, for them to be able to spell, write and pronounce words and to use them in a sentence , and to promote critical thinking of the learners since Economics is our daily living.

Unathi Nqandela, Director for Curriculum GET & ECD expressed words of encouragement to the learners who took part in the competition and acknowledged the presence of the sponsors who took part in order to make this event a success, and the subject advisors who were in the midst to support their fellow learners.

“This is greatly anticipated and exciting for us, because we must find ways and means of enthusing these learners to know the subject, and to be passionate about the subject,” said Nqandela.d

The University of Forth Hare is involved in teaching and research, their support in this competition was to encourage and to prepare learners for future endeavour, and to exploit opportunities that are offered by the University in bettering them in making better choices in life. Whereas the Banking Association South Africa is a financial institution that encourages learners about the importance of financial literacy and to teach them how to handle their finances at an early age.

19 learners took part in the Financial literacy spelling BEE and 48 learners in groups of three took part in the EMS Quiz and only 3 learners made it to the finals for the Financial Literacy spelling  BEE and 09 learners who made it to finals for the EMS Quiz.

Winners for Financial Literacy Spelling Bee Competitions are:

1.       Emihle Sobetwa (Grade 9) from Mariazel High School in Maluti District Alfred Ndzo West (with a floating trophy)
2.       Zusakhe Mayekiso (Grade 7) from Vezubuhle Primary School in Uitenhage District Nelson Mandela Bay
3.       span style="font-size: small;"> Asenathi Gama (Grade 9) from Mida School in Idutywa District Amathole East

strong>Quiz Winners Participating in teams of three

1.       Thandiswa Dinwayo, Tabuo Mgadi and Lutho Mbekeni from Zanokhanyo Baptist High School in Mount Frere District ( Alfred Ndzo West)
2.       Khabonina Mdokwe, Buhle Gcani and Esihle Mtakati from Port St Johns JSSS ( OR Tambo Coastal ) and
3.       Namhla Fihlani  Namhla Mantshontsho and Cinga Cunukelo from Bushulas JSS in Lusikisiki District (OR Tambo Coastal).

The Department of education held this financial literacy and Economics management science competition for the first.
