The Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) held a virtual National NSC results announcement at the Mandla Makupula Institute in East London.

The event obliged as an endorsement for the end of class of 2020 twelve years’ academic journey in the Basic Education Sector.

ECDoE MEC, Honourable Fundile Gade, handed over awards to the Provincial Top Performed learners Reynhardt Buys from Pearson High School in the Nelson Mandela Bay District. Buys won numerous awards which are:  for: the Position 1 in Mathematics Nationally, Position 1 in Quintile 5 as well as Position 3 in Mathematics.

It was not only Buys who represented the Eastern Cape in the National Awards but Simamkele Bhongo also came guns blazing receiving awards for the Amatole East District, Position 3 from Quintile 3 Schools. Bhongo was a student Xolilizwe Senior Secondary School.

According to Gade, the class of 2020 packed an excellent fight and have outdone his expectations. “This class had managed two things, the Covid-19 and their academic commitment, which is something that not any other person has ever experienced whilst at school,” said Gade.

The proud MEC was also humbled by the resilience that teachers showed continuously. “as you can see that the province has managed to produce Top performing learners nationally even through these trying times, it is with gratitude to the hard work, by not only the learners but the teachers as well," said Gade.

Xolilizwe Senior Secondary School principal Sizo Butshingi believes collective effort and commitment within the Education Sector from the teachers and the learners brought about the excellence witnessed on the day.

“We have always believed in our ability and that at the school there is nothing but to produce quality, as we have always wanted to be counted amongst the best in the province. Said Butshingi. The enthusiastic Butshingi concluded by congratulating the two learners saying, “I therefore congratulate both of the learners who are raising the Eastern Cape flag high throughout these unprecedented times of the pandemic”.

Reflecting on his motto that “hard work pays off” Reynhardt Buys said “even though the covid-19 pandemic brought about a lot of uncertainty, I never allowed them to get in the way of my set goals, hence I managed to sail through those uncharted waters”.

Buys was lost for words and modest and lost for words about his winnings He said” I am lost for words, I did not even expect this to happen and I am very proud of myself and all of this would not have been possible without the support from my parents, teachers at school and friends.”

Coming from the deep rural disadvantaged village, that has never stopped Bhongo from been counted amongst the best nationally. “As from today I feel like a role model to a black child who comes from the same background as myself especially,” said Bhongo.

He encouraged the class of 2021 to start preparing for final examinations as early as possible. “No one can predict what will happen during the course of the year, as in our case Covid-19 pandemic happened and I will also encourage our school staff to keep on doing the great work, keep on supporting all learners and hope that they will produce better quality for this year 2021,” concluded Bhongo.
